Μ. Εβδομάδα, Πάσχα και περίοδος Πεντηκοσταρίου  στην Ι.Μ. Ισπανίας και Πορτογαλίας

Στο πλαίσιο των εορτασμών για την Ρ/Κ Μ. Εβδομάδα  ο Σεβασμιότατος Μητροπολίτης ευρέθη στον ρ/κ καθεδρικό ναό της Μαδρίτης την Παρασκεύη προ του Λαζάρου (Μ. Παρασκευή των Ρ/Κ) όπου και αντάλλαξε ευχές για το επί θύρες Ρ/Κ Πάσχα με τον Σεβ/το Ρ/Κ αρχιεπίσκοπο Μαδρίτης Jose, καρδινάλιο Cobo, ο οποίος και τον προσεκάλεσε  να παραστεί στην νυχτερινή πασχάλια Θεία Λειτουργία.
Έτσι, το βράδυ του Σαββάτου του Λαζάρου, Μ. Σάββατο των Ρ/Κ, ο Σεβασμιώτατος, συνοδευόμενος από στενούς συνεργάτες του μετέβη στον ΡΚ καθεδρικό ναό της Μαδρίτης, Santa Maria de la Real de Almudena, όπου παρακολούθησε την αναστάσιμη ακολουθία, συνεορτάζοντας μετά των Ρ/Κ αδερφών γεγονός που χαρακτηρίστηκε ως παράδοση από τον καρδινάλιο Cobo και αποτυπώθηκε ως τέτοιο και από τον εκκλησιαστικό Τύπο. Ο Μητροπολίτης μας, προσεκάλεσε με την σειρά του τον Σεβ. καρδινάλιο να συνεορτάσει την Ανάσταση του Κυρίου με το Ορθόδοξο πλήρωμα της Μαδρίτης κατά την Παννυχίδα της Αναστάσεως.

Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Ποιμέναρχης μας, κατά την Αγία και Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, προέστη των Ιερών ακολουθιών στον Καθεδρικό Ναό των Αγίων Ανδρέου και Δημητρίου Μαδρίτης σε κλίμα κατάνυξης και κατά την τάξη της Μεγάλης του Χριστού Εκκλησίας,  και με την παρουσία πολυπληθούς, πολυεθνικού εκκλησιάσματος που πλήρωσαν τόσο τον Ναό όσο και τον περίβολό του.  
Τιμητική ήταν η παρουσία του Εξοχ. Πρέσβεως της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας Μιχάλη Ιωάννου που για μια ακόμη φορά παρέστη στις Ιερές ακολουθίες.

Το ιερό αναλόγιο διακονήσαν με αγάπη, όπως πάντα, φιλακόλουθοι νέοι , ενορίτες του καθεδρικού, υπό την εμπνευσμένη καθοδήγηση του μουσικολ. κ. Ιωάννη Μεσσαλά εξ Ελλάδος ενώ η ορθόδοξη κοινότητα της Μαδρίτης πρωτοστάτησε στις ετοιμασίες για τον ευπρεπισμό του ναού καθ’ όλη την διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου με την νεοσύστατη ομάδα της νεότητας της Μητροπόλεως να δίνει έναν ζωντανό τόνο.

Ιδιαιτέρως χαρμόσυνη και σε κλίμα χριστιανικής αδελφοσύνης, ήταν η παρουσία του Καδιναλίου Cobo μετά της συνοδείας του το βράδυ της Αναστάσεως,  σε ολόκληρη την ακολουθία όπου μετά το πέρας της αντάλλαξε Πασχάλιες ευχές με τον Σεβασμιώτατο και τους πιστούς.

Αντίστοιχα εορτάστηκε η Μ. Εβδομάδα και το Πάσχα σε όλη την επαρχία της Μητροπόλεως με πρωτοστατούσες τις πόλεις της Λισσαβώνος και της Βαρκελώνης.

Στην Λισσαβώνα, ο Πρωτοσύγκελος αρχιμ. Θεοφύλακτος Βίτσος τέλεσε τις ακολουθίες σε κατανυκτικό κλίμα με την παρουσία τόσο του Ορθοδόξου ποιμνίου της πορτογαλικής πρωτεύουσας όσο και επισκεπτών από την Ελλάδα και αλλαχού. Η παρουσία του φιλακόλουθου Πρέσβεως της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας στην Πορτογαλία κ. Ελπιδοφόρου Οικονόμου έδωσε έναν επιπλέον τόνο επισημότητας ενώ ιδιαιτέρως χαρμόσυνη ήταν η παρουσία των διεθνών ποδοσφαιριστών Φώτης Ιωαννίδης και Βαγγέλης Παυλίδης μαζί με τον πρώην ομοσπονδιακό προπονητή της Ελλάδος Φερνάντο Σάντος, οι οποίοι αγωνιζόμενοι στην Πορτογαλία αυθορμήτως σήκωσαν στα χέρια τους και περιέφεραν τον Επιτάφιο κατά την ακολουθία την Μ. Παρασκευή.

Στην Βαρκελώνη, κέντρο του καταλανικού κόσμου, η ραγδαία αυξανόμενη ορθόδοξη κοινότητα γέμισε ασφυκτικά τον ναό   όπου με την φροντίδα του εκεί εφημερίου αρχιμ. π. Χριστοδούλου Iontse τελέσθηκαν οι ακολουθίες δίνοντας μια γεύση ορθοδόξου παραδόσεως στους κατοίκους και τους επισκέπτες της καταλανικής πόλεως.

Στην Πασχάλια χαρά και περίοδο του Πεντηκοσταρίου συνεχίστηκε η λειτουργική με ακολουθίες και αγρυπνίες καθώς και με την εισδοχή νέων μελών στην Τοπική και Οικουμενική  Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία με την τέλεση των Μυστηρίων της Βαπτίσεως και του Χρίσματος τα οποία κατά την αρχαία παράδοση λάμβαναν χώρα την Πασχάλια περίοδο .

Ιδιαίτερη στιγμή ήταν η παρουσία στην επαρχία μας του π. Σταύρου Κοφινά, Συντονιστή του Δικτύου του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου για την Ψυχική Υγεία ο οποίος προσκεκλημένος της Ρ/Κ Επισκοπικής Συνέλευσης της Ισπανίας μίλησε στο εκεί οργανωθέν συνέδριο,  ενώ την Κυριακή της Σαμαρείτιδος, συλλειτούργησε μετά του Σεβασμιωτάτου Ποιμενάρχη μας και του απόγευμα της ιδίας συναντήθηκε με την ομάδα της ορθόδοξης νεολαίας στην Μαδρίτη όπου είχαν μια εποικοδομητική συζήτηση πάνω σε επίκαιρα και πνευματικά θέματα.  

Την Κυριακή των Αγ. Πατέρων η καρδιά της μητροπόλεως χτύπησε στην πόλη και την ενορία του Αγίου Νικολάου Αλικάντε καθώς με την ευκαιρία της εορτής και το γεγονός ότι ο Άγιος Νικόλαος ήταν ένας εκ των Πατέρων της Α’ Οικουμενικής Συνόδου, ο Σεβασμιώτατος μετέβη και τέλεσε την Θεία Λειτουργία  συμπαραστατούμενος απο τον εφημέριο π.Maksim Khomenko και επισκέπτες αδελφούς κληρικούς εξ Ουκρανίας, ενώ είχε την ευκαιρία να ανταλλάξει τον αναστάσιμο χαιρετισμό με το εκεί ορθόδοξο πλήρωμα.

Η περίοδος έληξε με την γενέθλιο ημέρα της Εκκλησίας, την Κυριακή της Πεντηκοστής όπου ο Σεβασμιώτατος τέλεσε την Θεία Λειτουργία στον  κατάμεστο  Καθεδρικό ναό ενώ ακολούθησε κατά την τάξη ο εσπερινός της Γονυκλισίας.    

  

Semana Santa, Pascua y período del Pentecostarion en la Santa Metrópolis de España y Portugal

En el marco de las celebraciones de la Semana Santa católica romana, Su Eminencia el Metropolita visitó la Catedral Católica Romana de Madrid el viernes anterior al Sábado de Lázaro (Viernes Santo para los católicos romanos), donde intercambió felicitaciones pascuales con Su Eminencia el Arzobispo Católico Romano de Madrid, el cardenal José Cobo. El cardenal invitó al Metropolitano a asistir a la Vigilia Pascual.

Así, en la noche del Sábado de Lázaro (Sábado Santo para los católicos romanos), Su Eminencia, acompañado por estrechos colaboradores, acudió a la Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena de Madrid, donde asistió a la celebración de la Resurrección junto con los hermanos católicos romanos. Este gesto fue descrito por el cardenal Cobo como una tradición y fue presentado como tal también por la prensa eclesiástica. A su vez, nuestro Metropolita invitó al cardenal a celebrar la Resurrección del Señor con la comunidad ortodoxa de Madrid durante la Vigilia Pascual ortodoxa.

Durante la Santa y Gran Semana, nuestro venerado Pastor presidió los oficios litúrgicos en la Catedral de los Santos Andrés y Demetrio de Madrid, en un ambiente de profunda devoción y conforme al orden de la Gran Iglesia de Cristo. Una multitud de fieles de diversas nacionalidades llenó tanto el templo como su recinto exterior.

Fue especialmente honrosa la presencia de Su Excelencia el Embajador de la República de Chipre, Sr. Michalis Ioannou, quien una vez más participó en los oficios sagrados.

El coro litúrgico fue servido con dedicación por jóvenes feligreses amantes de la tradición litúrgica, bajo la inspirada dirección del musicólogo Sr. Ioannis Messalas, procedente de Grecia. Asimismo, la comunidad ortodoxa de Madrid desempeñó un papel fundamental en el embellecimiento del templo durante todo este período, mientras que el recién constituido grupo juvenil de la Metrópolis aportó una nota de entusiasmo y vitalidad.

Particularmente alegre y marcada por un espíritu de fraternidad cristiana fue la presencia del cardenal Cobo y su séquito durante toda la celebración de la noche de Pascua ortodoxa. Al concluir la ceremonia, intercambió felicitaciones pascuales con Su Eminencia y con los fieles.

Del mismo modo, la Semana Santa y la Pascua fueron celebradas en toda la jurisdicción de la Metrópolis, destacando especialmente las ciudades de Lisboa y Barcelona.

En Lisboa, el Vicario General, archimandrita p. Teofilactos Vitsos, presidió los oficios en un clima de recogimiento, con la participación tanto de la comunidad ortodoxa local como de visitantes procedentes de Grecia y otros países. La presencia del piadoso Embajador de la República de Chipre en Portugal, Sr. Elpidoforos Oikonomou, añadió una nota especial de solemnidad. Especialmente emotiva fue también la presencia de los futbolistas internacionales Fotis Ioannidis y Vangelis Pavlidis, junto con el exseleccionador nacional de Grecia Fernando Santos, quienes, de manera espontánea, cargaron y acompañaron el Epitafio durante la procesión del Viernes Santo.

En Barcelona, corazón del mundo catalán, la comunidad ortodoxa, en rápido crecimiento, llenó completamente el templo. Bajo el cuidado pastoral del archimandrita p. Cristodoulos Iontse, se celebraron los oficios litúrgicos ofreciendo a residentes y visitantes una auténtica experiencia de la tradición ortodoxa.

Durante el tiempo pascual y el período del Pentecostarion continuó la vida litúrgica con oficios divinos y vigilias, así como con la incorporación de nuevos miembros a la Iglesia Ortodoxa local y universal mediante la celebración de los Santos Misterios del Bautismo y la Crismación, los cuales, según la antigua tradición, tenían lugar durante el período pascual.

Un momento particularmente significativo fue la visita a nuestra jurisdicción del padre Stavros Kofinas, Coordinador de la Red del Patriarcado Ecuménico para la Salud Mental. Invitado por la Conferencia Episcopal Católica de España, participó como ponente en un congreso organizado por dicha institución. Posteriormente, en el Domingo de la Samaritana, concelebró la Divina Liturgia con nuestro Metropolitano y, esa misma tarde, se reunió con el grupo juvenil ortodoxo de Madrid para mantener una fructífera conversación sobre temas espirituales y de actualidad.

En el Domingo de los Santos Padres, el corazón de la Metrópolis latió en la ciudad y parroquia de San Nicolás de Alicante. Con ocasión de la festividad y recordando que San Nicolás fue uno de los Padres del Primer Concilio Ecuménico, Su Eminencia celebró la Divina Liturgia acompañado por el párroco, padre Maksim Khomenko, y por clérigos visitantes procedentes de Ucrania. Tuvo además la oportunidad de intercambiar el saludo pascual con los fieles ortodoxos de la región.

El período concluyó con la fiesta del nacimiento de la Iglesia, el Domingo de Pentecostés, cuando Su Eminencia celebró la Divina Liturgia en una Catedral repleta de fieles. Posteriormente se celebró, según la tradición, el Oficio de las Oraciones de Rodillas (Vísperas de Pentecostés).

 

Holy Week, Pascha, and the Pentecostarion Period in the Holy Metropolis of Spain and Portugal

As part of the celebrations of the Roman Catholic Holy Week, His Eminence the Metropolitan visited the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Madrid on the Friday preceding Lazarus Saturday (Roman Catholic Good Friday), where he exchanged Easter greetings with His Eminence José Cobo, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Madrid and Cardinal of the Church. Cardinal Cobo also invited the Metropolitan to attend the Easter Vigil.

Accordingly, on the evening of Lazarus Saturday (Roman Catholic Holy Saturday), His Eminence, accompanied by close associates, visited the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid, where he attended the Easter Vigil together with the Roman Catholic faithful. This gesture was described by Cardinal Cobo as a tradition and was likewise presented as such in the ecclesiastical press. In turn, our Metropolitan invited the Cardinal to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord with the Orthodox faithful of Madrid during the Orthodox Paschal Vigil.

During Holy and Great Week, our revered Hierarch presided over the sacred services at the Cathedral of Saints Andrew and Demetrius in Madrid in an atmosphere of deep devotion and in accordance with the liturgical tradition of the Great Church of Christ. A large, multinational congregation filled both the cathedral and its surrounding grounds.

The presence of His Excellency Michalis Ioannou, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, was particularly honored, as he once again attended the sacred services.

The choir stand was served with dedication by young parishioners of the cathedral under the inspired guidance of musicologist Ioannis Messalas from Greece. The Orthodox community of Madrid also played a leading role in beautifying the cathedral throughout this period, while the newly established youth group of the Metropolis brought a vibrant and dynamic spirit to the celebrations.

Especially joyful and marked by Christian fraternity was the presence of Cardinal Cobo and his delegation throughout the Paschal service on the night of the Resurrection. At its conclusion, he exchanged Easter greetings with His Eminence and the faithful.

During the Paschal season and the period of the Pentecostarion, the liturgical life of the Church continued with services and vigils, as well as with the reception of new members into the local and universal Orthodox Church through the celebration of the Holy Mysteries of Baptism and Chrismation, which, according to ancient tradition, took place during the Paschal period.

In Lisbon, the Genaral Vicar, Archimandrite f. Theophylaktos Vitsos, celebrated the services in a prayerful atmosphere attended by both the local Orthodox flock and visitors from Greece and elsewhere. The presence of Elpidoforos Oikonomou, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Portugal, added a further note of solemnity. Particularly heartwarming was the presence of international footballers Fotis Ioannidis and Vangelis Pavlidis, together with former Greece national team coach Fernando Santos, who spontaneously carried and accompanied the Epitaphios during the Good Friday procession.

In Barcelona, the heart of the Catalan world, the rapidly growing Orthodox community filled the church to capacity. Under the pastoral care of Archimandrite Fr. Christodoulos Iontse, the services were celebrated, offering residents and visitors alike a vivid experience of Orthodox tradition.

The joy of Pascha continued throughout the Pentecostarion period with services and vigils celebrated according to the liturgical order of the Church.

A particularly significant moment was the visit to our Metropolis of Fr. Stavros Kofinas, Coordinator of the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Network for Mental Health. Invited by the Spanish Roman Catholic Episcopal Conference, he spoke at a conference organized there. On the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman, he concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with our Metropolitan and later that afternoon met with the Orthodox youth group in Madrid for a fruitful discussion on contemporary and spiritual topics.

On the Sunday of the Holy Fathers, the heart of the Metropolis beat in the city and parish of Saint Nicholas in Alicante. On the occasion of the feast and in remembrance that Saint Nicholas was among the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council, His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy together with the parish priest, Fr. Maksim Khomenko, and visiting clergy from Ukraine. He also had the opportunity to exchange the Paschal greeting with the local Orthodox faithful.

The period concluded with the birthday of the Church, the Feast of Pentecost, when His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy in a cathedral filled to capacity. This was followed, according to tradition, by the Vespers of Kneeling.

Most honourable brother Hierarchs and blessed children in the Lord,

Having arrived, through fasting, prayer, and solemnity, at the radiant and all-festal day of Holy Pascha, we hymn and glorify the world-saving Resurrection of our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ, which marks the manifest victory of life over death, renews all creation, and opens to humanity the way of deification by grace. The Church of Christ preserves the paschal experience in her liturgical life, in the labours of the Saints and Martyrs of the faith, in the eschatological impulse of monasticism, in the proclamation of the Gospel “to the ends of the earth,” in theology and the ecclesial arts, in the good witness of the faithful in the world, in the culture of love and solidarity, and in the immovable certainty that evil does not have the final word in history.

The Resurrection of the Lord is lived as a Christ-bestowed freedom, which inspires, nourishes, and strengthens the creative powers of the human person and the good struggle for “whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable,”[1] while reminding us all that the journey toward the Resurrection is inseparably bound to the Cross. The joy of the Cross and the Resurrection has preserved the people of God from identifying themselves with the spirit of this world, while at the same time safeguarding them from barren insularity and a spirituality devoid of dynamism and hope-bearing breath. The life of the faithful, in the crucified and risen Christ “for us men,” still today refutes every alien narrative of Christian ethos as a “morality of the weak,” supposedly embodied in humility, forgiveness, sacrificial love, asceticism, the Lord’s saying “but I say to you, do not resist the evil one,”[2] and other principles and dispositions that belong to the very core of our identity. Nothing could be further from the truth than this reading of the ethos of Christianity — of sacrificial love that “does not seek its own,” a love interwoven with courage, boldness, and existential authenticity. Pascha is a hymn to this freedom, to faith “working through love,”[3] which is not our own achievement but grace and a gift from above, and which is lived in the holy Sacraments of the Church and in the “mystery” of service to one’s neighbour. Indeed, “love for God does not in any way tolerate hatred toward one’s fellow human being.”[4]

The Church of Christ — the “salt of the earth,” the “light of the world,” the city “set on a hill,” the lamp placed “on the lampstand”[5] — bears active witness in the world, before the signs of the times, about the grace that has come and “the hope that is in us.”[6] The message of the Cross and the Resurrection resounds today as a Gospel of peace, reconciliation, and justice. War, hatred, and injustice stand opposed to the fundamental Christian principles for whose realization and establishment the people of God pray and labour each day. In the light of the Resurrection, we beseech the Lord on behalf of the victims of wartime violence, the orphans, the mothers who mourn their children, and all those who bear in body and soul the effects of human cruelty and callousness. “Christ is risen” is a denial and condemnation of violence and fear and an invitation to a life of peace. War brings forth lamentation and death; the Resurrection conquers death and bestows incorruptibility.

Before the daily images of the cruelty of war, the Church raises her voice and proclaims the sacredness of the human person — of every concrete human being anywhere on earth — and the duty of absolute respect for that dignity; and she calls upon us to “know our own worth, honour the Prototype, recognise the power of the mystery, and understand for whose sake Christ died.”[7] The Resurrection of the Lord is the restoration of the human being to his pre-eternal calling. As the “beginning of another eternal life,” it heals alienating relationships and establishes the peace “which surpasses all understanding”[8] — a peace that encompasses worldly reconciliation and pacification.

Inspired by God, the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church — the tenth anniversary of whose convocation we honour this year — underlined the duty of the Church “to encourage whatever truly serves the cause of peace (Rom. 14:19) and opens the way to justice, brotherhood, true freedom, and mutual love among all the children of the one heavenly Father, as well as among all peoples who make up the one human family.”[9]

Holy Pascha is the whole of our spiritual civilization, the very core of our piety. The Resurrection of the Lord is also our own resurrection in the present age, and at the same time a prefiguration and foretaste of the “common resurrection of all human beings” and of the renewal of the whole creation. Illumined by the all-radiant light of the face of the Risen Christ, and glorifying in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs His all-holy Name — the Prince of Peace, who is with us “always, unto the end of the age” [10]— we wish you a blessed Resurrection, a paschal season filled with divine gifts, and every day of your lives likewise, crying out the universal proclamation of joy: “Christ is risen! Truly the Lord is risen!”
