First Meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the 18th Plenary Session of the International Joint Commission on the Theological Dialogue between the Lutheran World Federation and the Orthodox Church, Tirana, Albania, 24th September - 1st October 2019
COMMUNIQUE
The First Meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the 18th Plenary Session of the International Joint Commission on the Theological Dialogue between the Lutheran World Federation and the Orthodox Church was held in Tirana, Albania, from the 24th of September to the 1st of October 2019. The Meeting was hosted by the Orthodox Chuch in Albania with the generous hospitality of H.B. Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania, and took place at the Skete of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women, next to St. Vlash Monastery/ Orthodox Theological Academy.
The Meeting, Co-chaired by H.E. Metropolitan Prof. Dr. Gennadios of Sassima (Ecumenical Patriarchate) from the Orthodox side, and by Bishop Dr. Johann Schneider (Evangelical Church in Central Germany/EKMD) from the Lutheran World Federation side, discussed the theme of "The Place and the Role of the Holy Spirit in the Life of the Church".
Orthodox participants were: H.E. Metropolitan Prof. Dr. Gennadios of Sassima (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and V. Rev. Archimandrite Agathangelos Siskos, Archivist (Co-secretary, Ecumenical Patriarchate), V. Rev. Archimandrite Dr. Alexi Chehadeh (Patriarchate of Antioch), V. Rev. Protopresbyter Prof. Dr. George Dion Dragas (Patriarchate of Jerusalem), Rev. Dr. Cosmin Pricop (Patriarchate of Romania), H.E. Metropolitan Dr. Isaias of Tamasos and Oreini (Church of Cyprus), Prof. (Em.) Dr. Christos Voulgaris (Church of Greece), Dr. Nathan Hoppe (Church of Albania), V. Rev. Dr. Václav Ježek (Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia), and Consultant V. Rev. Protopresbyter Stefanos Chrysanthou (Church of Cyprus).
Lutheran participants were representing various member churches of the Lutheran World Federation: Bishop Dr. Johann Schneider (Evangelical Church in Central Germany/EKMD), Bishop Dr. Donald McCoid (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, U.S.A./Representing the LWF - Office Geneva), Prof. Dr. Kenneth G. Appold (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, U.S.A.), Rev. Dr. Heta Hurskainen (Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland), Rev. Prof. Dr. Stefan Tobler (Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Romania), and Prof. Dr. Jennifer Wasmuth (Consultant, Institute for Ecumenical Research, Strasbourg, France).
The Committee members heard presentations on the theme from both sides, about the place and the role of the Holy Spirit: a) in the Life of the Church, b) into the World, c) in Baptism and Ministry, and d) in Eucharist:

Some General Thoughts”, Bishop Dr. Johann Schneider, “A Lutheran Approach to the Orthodox Understanding of Pneumatology”, Rev. Prof. Dr. Stefan Tobler, “The Role of the Spirit in the life of the Church and into the world. A General Approach”, V. Rev. Dr. Václav Ježek, “Luther’s understanding of the Holy Spirit. An Orthodox Approach”, Rev. Dr. Heta Hurskainen, “The Action of the Holy Spirit in Baptism, and Ministry”, V. Rev. Archimandrite Dr. Alexi Chehadeh, “The action of the Holy Spirit in Baptism, and Ministry (Ierosyni)”, Rev. Anne Burghardt (presented by Prof. Dr. Kenneth G. Appold), and Rev. Dr. Cosmin Pricop, “The Action of the Holy Spirit in Eucharist”.
Discussions on papers reflecting these themes identified areas of agreement between the two traditions, particularly in the understanding of the place and the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church. A considerable number of open questions and differences still need further discussion. In addition, discussions were held on pneumatology, as related to Baptism, Ministry and Eucharist. The Committee prepared a common paper, based on previous statements of the Commission, on the works, role and place of the Holy Spirit. It was decided that the new theme for the next stage of the dialogue will be: “The Holy Spirit, the Church and the World”.
The working sessions of the Preparatory Committee started with an Οpening Prayer at the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women Chapel, officiated by Metropolitan Isaias. The Commission members participated in working sessions after daily Morning Prayer.
On Friday, 27th of September, the participants had the opportunity to visit places of historical, archaeological and religious interest, such as the Monastery of the Dormition of Theotokos, at the ancient city of Apollonia, and the Tomb of the New Martyr Cosmas the Aetolian, near Fier. They were accompanied by H.E. Metropolitan Nikolaos of Apollonia and Fier.
On Sunday, 29th of September, the members attended the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Resurrection in Tirana, celebrated by Archbishop Anastasios. After that, the members had the opportunity to meet him. The Archbishop welcomed the members of the Committee, spok about the revival and the history of the Orthodox Church in Albania since the collapse of communism, and about his pastoral and spiritual efforts to regenerate the Church after its complete destruction. In the afternoon they visited the Castle of Krujë.
The Committee expressed deep appreciation and gratitude to Archbishop Anastasios for his generous hospitality, as well to all the Staff of the Orthodox Theological Academy, and Sister Rachel at the Skete.
The Committee decided that the next Preparatory Meeting will be held from the 29th of May to the 4th of June 2020, under the hospitality of Bishop Schneider (venue to be determined).

Mensaje del Patriarca Ecuménico para el acto ‘Paz sin Fronteras’ 2019 y participación de nuestra Metrópolis
MENSAJE DE SU SANTIDAD BARTOLOMÉ I,
ARZOBISPO DE CONSTANTINOPLA-NUEVA ROMA
Y PATRIARCA ECUMÉNICO,
A LOS ORGANIZADORES Y PARTICIPANTES
EN LA 33ª EDICIÓN DEL ENCUENTRO
“RELIGIONES Y CULTURAS EN DIÁLOGO POR LA PAZ”
DE LA COMUNIDAD DE SANT´EGIDIO
(Madrid, 15 – 17 de septiembre de 2019)
Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
Εἰρήνη/Irene/Paz, diosa de los antiguos griegos, era la personificación del estado pacífico de las cosas. Era hija de Δίας/Zeus y de Θέμις (Themis), diosa de la Justicia, y hermana de Εὐνομία/Eunomia (Legalidad) y de Δίκη (Juicio). Los antiguos griegos, después de cada guerra, construían altares a Εἰρήνη, a quien también le aplicaban los epítetos "Γλυκεία" (Dulce), "Βαθύπλουτος" (Profundamente Rica), "Πλουτοδότειρα" (Dadora de Riquezas), etc. El escritor trágico Eurípides y el cómico Aristófanes presentan a Εἰρήνη en sus obras teatrales como portadora de euforia, prosperidad y riqueza.
En la Sagrada Escritura Dios es caracterizado como “Dios de la paz” (Rom 15,33) y también como “el Príncipe de la paz”, cuya paz no tiene límites (Is 9, 6-7). Según el Salmista, el lugar de la paz es siempre Dios. Por eso, cuando Dios dirige su rostro hacia su creación, todo se apacigua, mientras que cuando lo oculta, todo se ve turbado (cfr. Sal 104 (103), 29-30).
Nuestro gran predecesor, San Gregorio el Teólogo, escribe que el bien de la paz procede de la Santísima Trinidad, cuya característica principal es un estado pacífico. El hombre fue creado por el Dios de la paz con una naturaleza pacífica, y su relación con su Creador en el paraíso fue absolutamente pacífica. Pero a partir del momento de su rebeldía contra Él, la paz huyó del corazón del hombre. El restablecimiento de la paz en el corazón del hombre caído lo ha realizado Cristo Jesús, “el Señor de la paz” (2 Tes 3,16). “Él es nuestra paz; el que de los dos pueblos ha hecho uno, derribando en su cuerpo de carne el muro que los separaba: la enemistad” (Ef 2, 14). “Bienaventurados los que trabajan por la paz, porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios” (Mt 5, 9), dice Jesús en su famoso Sermón de la Montaña. "Εἰρηνοποιός" en lengua griega no es solo el que trabaja por la paz, sino también -y sobre todo- el que la proporciona a su alrededor. Y, naturalmente, uno no puede proporcionar a otro lo que él mismo no posee.
En la Nueva Roma, Constantinopla, los cristianos edificaron una majestuosa iglesia (que se yergue aún hoy al lado de Santa Sofía) que dedicaron a la Paz de Dios y llamaron de Santa Irene. Los grandes Padres de la Iglesia han hablado y escrito mucho sobre la paz, “esta dulce cosa y nombre”, según San Gregorio el Teólogo. Las palabras de San Serafín de Sarov, santo contemporáneo, son de rabiosa actualidad: “Encuentra tu propia paz interior y miles de hombres hallarán descanso cerca de ti”.
A pesar del fortísimo deseo del hombre de vivir en paz y de sus esfuerzos por conseguirla, este sacrosanto anhelo permanecerá para siempre inalcanzable si, para satisfacerlo, acude lejos de su fuente. Y la fuente de la paz verdadera y auténtica es solamente Dios. En la persona divino-humana de Cristo Jesús el hombre descubre y encuentra nuevamente la posibilidad de su reconexión con su Creador-Fuente de la paz. El Señor de la paz viene en toda época y ofrece la paz a los hombres, pero no una paz genérica de este mundo, sino su propia paz, “la paz que supera toda mente”, como dicen los Santos Padres. “La paz os dejo, mi paz os doy; no os la doy yo como la da el mundo. Que no se turbe vuestro corazón ni se acobarde” (Juan 14, 27).
Después lo que hemos expuesto arriba, huelga subrayar el importantísimo papel de las Iglesias, Confesiones, Religiones y Culturas en el ámbito vital de la paz. Esto lo ha comprendido muy bien la Comunidad de Sant´Egidio, muy querida y estimada por nosotros, que trabaja incesantemente en esta dirección en el espíritu del inolvidable Encuentro de Asís del año 1986, culminando en los Encuentros Internaciones Iterreligiosos e Interculturales por la paz mundial celebrados cada año bajo el título genérico de: “Religiones y Culturas en Diálogo” y que este año de la salvación de 2019 tiene lugar en la capital española, Madrid, con el tema específico: “Paz sin fronteras”, organizado conjuntamente con la Archidiócesis Católica Romana local. Congratulándonos con dichos organizadores -es decir, la Comunidad de Sant´Egidio y la Archidiócesis Católica Romana de Madrid en las personas de su Fundador, el Prof. Andrea Riccardi y su Presidente Prof. Marco Impagliazzo por parte de la primera y de su Arzobispo Metropolitano el Eminentísimo Sr. Cardenal Carlos Osorro Sierra por parte de la segunda respectivamente-, deseamos desde lo más profundo de nuestro corazón un buen y fructífero éxito en las labores del Encuentro de este año e invocamos sobre todos los participantes la rica gracia y la infinita misericordia del Señor y Fuente de la Paz sin fronteras, Jesucristo. ¡Amén!
